About me

I received my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Brescia (Italy) and a PhD in Microsystems Engineering at University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy).

I have almost 20-year experience in research on groundbreaking medical devices like capsule endoscopy and robotic surgery.

I have led research and teaching projects on surgical simulation, including the largest international studies for robotic surgery.

I have coordinated the Italian part of the multicenter randomized control trial of Fundamentals of Robotic Surgery project, funded by industry and Department of Defense of United States.

I have been responsible for the accreditation of EndoCAS (Pisa, Italy), as the only Italian center, from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for the training of surgeons and residents through simulation for 10 years.

As soon as artificial intelligence (AI) was applied to surgery, I coordinated a project on deep learning to predict proficiency acquisition in robotic surgery.

As a member of the AI Task Force of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) I am currently collaborating to collect a large dataset for the critical view of safety challenge.

I am author of more than 50 publications on peer-reviewed journals, with some on the most renowned journals, including Lancet, BMJ, Nature Reviews Gastroenterology and Hepatology, European Urology, and Annals of Surgery.
